Film Style: Men and Art

You know I love to shoot film, as it is one of those throwback activities that I truly do for love. The lack of control is liberating, and the need to get the shot in one go is empowering. Thus, here are some style film shots to ease you into the weekend; a set of menswear style and a set of the late LATE night set-up of the warehouse art pop-up I collaborated on, the Water Street Project.

Above is the ever-dapper Grant Harris, menswear aficionado and founder of Image Granted. More snaps below, with even more film photos later this week...enjoy!

Street Style: XXX

I photographed this Brit rock chic chica in Dupont Circle during DC Flag Day...we shared a lively chat griping about the lack of DC shopping options for those of us more inclined to channel Zeppelin than the royal family. I love the tension created by her feminine beauty and edgier, more androgynous apparel.

GoKateShoot for Washingtonian: Kassie Rempel

Kassie Rempel is on her game. This stylish Washingtonian is the founder of Simply Soles, a shoe company receiving rave reviews for their exceptional selection and exemplary customer service. She also started her own styling business called Kassie's Closet, and is raising a family. Shazam! As a fellow independent woman focused on her career, I found Kassie to be absolutely inspiring, and enjoyed our talk. I had the pleasure of photographing her for the What I Wear to Work column in Washingtonian this week. Check out the whole feature HERE, and outtakes below.

Ginger Moxie

I've always had an appreciation for red hair. When I was young, I dreamed of having long, luxurious gingery locks reflective of my love for fellow independent ladies Pippi Longstocking and Anne of Green Gables. As I grew older, I came to appreciate the ideas of wildness and independence...and developed friendships with redheads both natural and adopted who embodied that devil-may-care attitude, eyebrows cocked and flaming manes flying. Yesterday after our shoot for Washingtonian Magazine, my friend Shannon Cusello indulged my request to take some photos fully celebrating her hair. The following series is just that; a joyous expression of drama and moxie.

GoKateShoot for Washingtonian: Hon Fest 2012

HONFEST. I'd never heard of this Baltimore tradition before in my entire, New England-originated life. A "Hon", short for the term of endearment "honey", refers to particularly sassy blue-collar women from the Baltimore neighborhood Hampden. A Hon rocks her beehive high, cat eye glasses, and relishes all things fabulously tacky. Hon Fest celebrates the local "Bawlmer" culture in a weekend-long festival filled with ladies and gentleman alike rocking the essential Hon look.

I went on assignment for Washingtonian Magazine to document all of the wildness. I may or may not have really, really enjoyed dressing the part. Who says going under cover can't be fabulous? There was high-top hair, cheetah print, and enough hairspray to choke a drag queen...naturally, I loved it. You can find the feature HERE, but I have some of my favorite outtakes below.

Plum Dana

This is Dana, a DC-based model with whom I am working for an upcoming project for a magazine. We met up earlier this week to chat about her hair, which has plum tones woven throughout. Beautiful, and so dreamy! I wanted to bring those colors out in post-production, and capture her intensely green eyes. I'm really happy with this outtake and excited to share more soon. We've talked about stylish hair here before, so I thought I'd offer some sartorial goodness in that department.

Street Peep: Get Arty

Happy Wednesday! Here are some street snaps I've been collecting...summer is definitely in full swing.

Thirst for Style: What I Wore

As you may recall, at the end of May I spoke at Thirst DC. I never  ask my subjects (you lovely, stylish people!) to do anything I am not willing to do, so I thought I'd share what I've been spotted wearing recently. Above is my look from Thirst; this vintage 1950's cocktail dress selected by my friend and stylist Elise Peterson was perfect for being on stage. Paired with a bold lip, it made me feel ultra-feminine.

Neuvo-Vintage Biker

I'm going to be rocking and rolling out lots of new photos this week. To start, here is a series I shot featuring some seriously inspiring menswear on Scotty from GoodWood. There is an incredible mix of vintage and modern, mixing old school elements, impeccable grooming, and a perfect attention to detail to make everything just so. You know?  The neck tie did it for me, frankly. So top notch.

Billy Mode on Film

During the creation of the Water Street Project, I spent many days in a row at the warehouse documenting the creation of the pieces. I have some rad stop motion videos that I'll be sharing soon, but here is a film film I took of artist Billy Mode in front of his piece. Awesome! I'm loving becoming friends with the DC street artists; I think their work is really inspiring and am looking forward to sharing more of it here.

Happy Sunday...I'm off to Baltimore to shoot Hon Fest for Washingtonian Magazine! You know I've got my beehive hairdo and cat eye glasses on! Shazam!

Pre-Seersucker Soiree

Whee! How do you know it's summer? Flowers! Little whispy dresses! Hats! All of these things came together perfectly for a little Pre-Seersucker Social Soiree we held at Proper Topper, a local institution of a boutique. I've been going since I moved to DC and am always wowed by the lovely little bits and bobs, from books to sweet hats and dresses, that I lust over. I never had to worry about buying gifts, since I could just pop in to the store the day of and know that I would find something. Divine!

Proper Topper paired with Dandies & Quiantrelles, the Washington Post's FW Magazine, and I to throw a sweet petite soiree to benefit the DC Public Libraries. We had hat-making, pink champagne, and the loveliest little cookies to munch on as we shopped and bopped around. There was even a style-themed pop-up library courtesy of the stylish DC librarians. Of course, everyone got very dressed, and it was lovely. Check out the photos below, and skip over to the Proper Topper blog for their post HERE.

GoKateShoot for Washingtonian: Elaine

I photographed the lovely Miss Elaine for my column What I Wear to Work in her gorgeous, completely to-die-for house in the H St corridor...major interior decorator swag on top of great personal style. Look at that color blocking! And the wall paper! So much chic inspiration all the way around. We had a blast shooting on Memorial day, and I'm excited to share a few of the outtakes with you! You can find the whole article HERE

Silver Louboutins. That's really all I need to say.

Dots add such a whimsical touch to these blood orange pants.

First of all, look at her bedroom. Gorgeous. I'm totally swooning over those pillows, and I love the combination of her peplum skirt color with the teal walls. Yum!

Film: Strut Into Summer

Happy Saturday! This week has been filled with lots of exciting changes so I'm a little delayed in posting.  Don't worry, I'll share soon. Thank you for understanding! Here are some incredible film photos to get you back into the style swing of things; I got three rolls of film back from the developer, so I'll be sharing those over the course of this weekend.

This set are filled with strong females and strong colors. Many were taken around town as stylist Elise Peterson and I prepared for the WW Club in late April, and feature other ladies whose styles I admire. Statement sunglasses, vibrant vintage pieces filled with stories, and some abstract shots to add some emotional color.
