Disco Roofdeck

Actress Mundy Spears is utterly committed to a lot of things...she is an endlessly loyal friend, a talented artist, and neuvo-disco punk style icon. She was one of my first friends in DC! Last weekend we were at a lovely rooftop barbeque hosted by Eric Schulze of Thirst and I couldn't resist taking some snaps...of course, Eric stole the camera and took one of she and I as well. Why the high vantage point on that picture? He's 6'6"! It's a great photo angle, I'll give him that.

Can't wait for summer...I hope you all have fun weekend plans for the holiday!

Announcement: GoKateShoot to Speak at ThirstDC

Hey team! If you follow the blog, you know that I've become great friends with the ThirstDC team. I first met co-founders Eric and Lori at Busboys and Poets five months ago (at this exact documented moment, in fact), and they've been trying to get me to speak ever since. For those of you who aren't familiar, ThirstDC is like a sexier version of TED, with booze, and backed by the Smithsonian. Yes, the Smithsonian of dinosaurs and rocket ships and all the other cool, smart stuff down near the monuments. They're hype for Thirst and you should be too! Expert speakers give 10-20 minute talks on wild topics only somewhat related to their field; think a rocket scientist discussing dating, for instance. Rad! The Thirst team does an awesome job talking about themselves HERE, so check that out for more info.

I'm speaking at ThirstDC on May 31 and you should come. Yikes, I know! Some of the other speakers have announced their talks, while some are keeping theirs a secret until later. Me being me and generally overexcited about damn near everything, announced my talk already. I'll be speaking about how people use each other, turning the concept on its head to redefine what it means to feel used...and how that's an awesome thing. And you're all, "What? But you're a photographer who talks about style! What does this have anything to do with anything?!" to which I would reply, "Everything has everything to do with everything, don't worry! Get your ticket, get dressed up and come out to find out. Tickets are live and you can get them HERE. DO IT! Come watch me stand up in front of a sold out, 300+ person crowd and wax poetic on all things social, stylish, and artistic (potentially having a moment in the process, but hopefully not). It will be fiesty, it will be random, and it will be entertaining, if anything.

The Ladies of Butler + Claypool

Last weekend, I stopped by the Butler + Claypool pop-up shop to peruse their lovely vintage wares and catch up with the ladies (who I first photographed HERE when I first moved to DC). Of course I some quick portraits along the way. Pictured here are Holly Thomas (editor of Refinery 29), Krista Haywood, and Rachel Cothran (who I also photographed HERE and ). Kristin Guiter is not pictured, but is also on the team (I photographed her most recently at the Corcoran Ball, HERE). These ladies are the original leaders of DC style and do a fantastic job with B+C; make sure to check out their next pop-up!

So, We Have Some Kittens...

Happy Saturday! My cousin and I are fostering four 5-week-old kittens, and they are hard not to take lots of photos of! They will be up for adoption in 5 weeks when they're a bit bigger, but I did want to share some of my favorite snaps. There are a pair of light grey ones (Zoe and Hendricks), a black one with one socks (Marc Jacobs, natch, props to Marshall of TPWP for the name), and a dark grey tiger (Stella).

Have a wonderful day!

The Romantic Movement

As I mentioned, I photographed the Romantic Movement, a style and music event co-hosted by the gentlemen of style blog Street Etiquette and MDLN Ventures. I described the whole event HERE if you're curious, and shared some super-dreamy shots HERE already. These are some of my favorite street snaps. I didn't include any photos of the performers; I got some great ones that will have a post of their own. There was incredible layering, pop-art accessories, and lots of other details that were making me swoon all night long. Enjoy!

GoKateShoot for Washingtonian: Dwayne Brice

Hey! I'm sorry for the radio silence; I took a much-needed break from blogging for a few days so that I could get some other projects in order. I have some exciting things coming up that I can't wait to share!

But first, and most importantly, here are some new photos! These images are of Dwayne of Hu's Wear, one of my favorite designer boutiques in the city. I photographed him for Washingtonian Magazine; you can check out those photos HERE. His own style is very inspiring; soft layers with pops of color make him a shoe in for one of DC's most stylish men. He also lives with my good friend Quincy, so they are quite the sartorial roommates. I love his edgy take on neuvo-nerd with pieces by Dries Van Noten, Helmut Lang, and Jil Sander coupled with vintage.
