I have the pleasure of being friends with a wide variety of creatives. Chefs and writers, actors and musicians - the diversity of their output inspires me as much as their work ethic. We talk about creative process, the challenges of being self employed, and dream up ways to work together doing what we love most.
One of those creatives is Gus Heagerty, a director, playwright and yogi who travels all over the country working on incredible theater projects. When he's not on the road he's based in DC, a block from my house.
Gus is amazing in many ways, but what I admire most about him is how he gets sh*t done without making a fuss. He focuses on making the work, and making a lot of it.
Lots of artists like to advertise their Great Creative Struggle, or How Their Day Job Keeps Them From Achieving Their Dreams, or Feeling Blocked. Not Gus. Gus joyfully goes forth into the world with a playful attitude to make his work. He isn't afraid of messing up, or being wrong, or not having the perfect balance - he lives the philosophy that being great at something takes work, day in and day out. There are moments of magic, but Gus realizes that doing the thing you love means joyfully working at it, even when you're not in the mood. Even when it is not inherently joyful. Even when it's sort of a slog. He does it with an infectious attitude that I really admire, because it's not an easy thing to hold on to.
This past summer, we twirled around our neighborhood together for some dreamy photos together. With 2015 client work wrapped up I finally got around to editing them. I hope you enjoy Gus as much as I do - send him your creative community love vibes!
