American Ballet Theatre x Kennedy Center

January 29, 2016

I had the pleasure of shooting behind the scenes with American Ballet Theatre (ABT) at the Kennedy Center for their upcoming weekend run of Sleeping Beauty. I love dance, I love taking behind the scenes photos, and I love a good wig, so this was a FUN assignment - the show includes almost 200 wigs. We shot hair and makeup, prepping costumes, dance rehearsal, and all the little backstage moments during the tech rehearsal.

I've shot backstage at the Kennedy Center before and it's always a blast. Working with performers is a special collaboration; they love an audience, and I love a subject. Dancers are no exception; they're usually tickled to do leaps for the sake of a good photo. It's exhilarating to photograph a group of artists who are so fully living their dream, and are among the best dancers in the world. I danced for 20 years, so the dance community is close to my heart and the show prep process special.

I hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as I did taking them. You can check out the accompanying feature written by Svetlana Legetic HERE.
