For the July 2015 issue of Prevention Magazine I photographed Cherissa Jackson during a fun and inspiring fitness portrait session.
A former nurse for the Air Force, she continues to hear and see the jarring noises and images that come after serving for four tours. Instead of painkillers, she lifts weights to manage her PTSD. When the images come flooding back, she goes for a run to make them disappear. "I get to shed off PTSD like pounds," says Cherissa. Now, she helps other veterans manage their PTSD in similar ways, using a healthy lifestyle and fitness to stay positive and focused. Striving for a calm presence with every stride, Cherissa's way of coping is truly uplifting.
