Photographs of artist Amy Sherald in her Baltimore, MD studio for Elle Magazine. We made these pictures shortly after her portrait of Michelle Obama for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery was unveiled and Sherald’s life was changing overnight. Deeply committed to her craft, she waited tables up until the White House commission and the ensuing art world frenzy. Our shoot was intimate and serene; I wanted to create a moment of solace in the eye of the storm. Amy was wonderful to collaborate with and we remain in touch. It was an honor and a joy to photograph this living icon who is pushing conversations about who is welcome and represented in the art world and on gallery walls.
