A few weeks ago my partner Martin and I headed west to visit my uncle on his farm in rural Pennsylvania near the birthplace of the oil industry. I did a story about him last summer, and wanted to get some images to fill it out. Since he's battling cancer he doesn't have his usual herd of beef cattle this year, so we hiked, helped with projects like fixing a flooded ditch and righting a toppled apple tree, and visited about family, values, and finding one's life's work. We roamed the pastures, went to bed early, and I relaxed into baking and crafting home cooked meals. It was a joy to get out of the city and off the grid to a place where I spent several weeks every summer growing up.
The story Up Back the House I created last summer is HERE, and you can scroll through my favorites from our recent trip in the gallery below. I hope you're all enjoying your summers and finding ways to stay in touch with your roots as well. Stay cool.
