What a year! My two big goals for 2014 were to "swing less, but swing harder" and to travel. This year I shot fewer jobs but more big ticket ones, so I hit the road and checked off both goals.
Most importantly, I got the chance to work with creative brands, collaborated with more creative hustlers than I can count, and had the opportunity to work on meaningful personal projects. I'm incredibly lucky and grateful.
Highly visible advertising campaigns for Pfizer, the Department of Homeland Security, and Destination DC gave me the flexibility to travel to Nicaragua, Iceland, Vermont and NYC, work on a documentary on gender and beauty norms for breast cancer patients and do a passel of cool kid lifestyle stories. My work for The Washington Post and private clients brought a deep dive into Washington society life, and I continued my long term project on the daily life of a retired farmer in rural Pennsylvania.
I also selected for the Women Photojournalists of Washington 2014 Juried Exhibition, and nominated for the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award for Photography. I was in inspiring company for both, and am honored to have been included. I also had the opportunity to speak at the Georgetown University Women in Leadership Summit - it was a blast sharing some things I've learned with such an engaged and intelligent group of women.
Things have changed a lot since 2014 began, so I thought I'd share some of my favorite images from the last year. Happy New Year everyone!

BRANDS & LIFESTYLE
From terrariums to menswear, I had the pleasure of partnering with some cool brands in 2014. Whether small local businesses or billboard campaigns for international brands, helping them tell stories in an energetic, personal way was definitely a highlight of the year.
#GoKateTravel
I spent a few weeks road tripping around Iceland, catching some surf in Nicaragua, and getting wintery in Vermont this year, among other destinations. I haven't released most of the images yet, but this is a sneak preview! For more photos from my adventures, check out my hashtag #gokatetravel on Instagram and keep an eye on the blog - I'll be releasing the full stories soon.
KIDDOS
I've been shooting the 'Mom Crush' feature for Washingtonian Mom magazine since the publication's inception; this year the work took on a more light-hearted, documentary tone. Kids aren't ever nervous about getting their picture and just are who they are. It's fun to play Show and Tell, see their favorite things, and learn about what they like to do while photographing.
