When tapes of Donald Trump talking about sexually assaulting women were released I reacted with the visceral rage shared by countless women. Almost every woman has a story of assault of some kind, myself included, and his careless words triggered every one of us. WE'RE STANDING UP AND SAYING ENOUGH.
These experiences are unacceptable. When a presidential candidate makes a statement about groping women without their consent it normalizes that behavior and deepens the toxic rape culture in which we already live. I wanted to do something to drive the conversation forward.
Banshees was born.
Created in collaboration with designer Maggie Famiglietti, Banshees brings together women to discuss public misogyny and encourage them to vote. I reached out to other female creatives to plan salon-style small group photo shoots that became a cathartic discussion forum. Sex-positive, confident women talk about what it's like to be victimized for leaving the house. What it's like changing how you dress, act, and express yourself. How we constantly apologize because society has taught us to. How there are few outlets for sharing stories of assault that build community and don't blame the victim.
In the photos, subjects are styled aggressively in a way that make them feel powerful but would elicit unwanted male attention in public. I encourage them to act on the anger society encourages us to repress and find productive power for change through that anger. Casting embraces diversity, bringing together small groups of young women with varied backgrounds. Subjects leave feeling empowered and connected with the women they meet on set.
The Banshees project is a product of Slvt Cult, a female-run arts collective that creates subversive multimedia art for the contemporary feminist. We used my images to create an anti-misogyny, pro-vote wheat paste campaign that's papered across the streets of DC - NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, Portland and other cities will follow.
