New work for Capitol File Magazine. Editor Michael Clements approached me about photographing over a slate of Washington DC arts and culture influencers. I love editorial because it's often an exercise in creative problem solving. In this case, we had to shoot a whopping twenty one subjects within an eight hour shoot day. When the magazine sent over the schedule, my head spun imagining the pace at which we'd have to work. To give you a sense, it's not impossible to receive an assignment that allows eight hours for one subject, let alone twenty one. But I was also excited by the challenge; this was an opportunity to put my personality to work to create a party.
First, the concept. To capitalize on the creativity of the subjects I suggested a color blocked studio concept that showed off architectural elements of the space. That would allow us to have a consistent look and feel while getting as much pizzaz into the pictures as possible. I have a big personality and knew that of anyone in DC, these subjects would be game to use bold color. We put on very danceable oldies, and set to work.
Next, the execution. We were given access to the Park Hyatt Hotel. My assistants and I did a walk through and decided to stay in the suite. I set up wardrobe in the master bedroom, where I'd greet guests and help them decided what to wear. Next they went to hair and makeup while I directed my team about what color backdrops and lighting setups we would use. I'm fortunate to have a wonderful group of assistants I work with regularly; they can make or a break a shoot by making sure things flow smoothly on the technical side of a production. Post-production happens quickly on editorial shoots, since we're often on deadline. The photos are in print before you know it!
You can check out my favorite photos from the shoot below. Many thanks to my editor Michael Clements and his team at the magazine, the Park Hyatt for graciously hosting us, my assistants, the Glam Squad hair and makeup team, and of course, my wonderful subjects who proved so willing to play. Enjoy the photos!
